Known for its more than 4,000 temples in a 26-square-mile space within a dusty, flat plain, the best times to experience the serenity and scope of Bagan are at dawn and dusk. After heading from my hotel's cozy bed and climbing in the dark with my camera and tripod to set up on a ledge of Minyeingone Pagoda, this was my reward—the unlayering of Myanmar's ancient city of temples. Photo: A pathway covered in red autumn leaves in a German forest
This Month in Photo of the Day: Traveler Contest Images
This photo was taken during autumn in Hameln, Germany, which is the birthplace of the infamous Rattenfänger—or Pied Piper, as we Americans know it. This shot is actually on top of the last few hills that soon sink into the state of Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony). This area is essentially lowland plains—hence the name Lower Saxony! A dew-bathed juvenile leopard takes a peaceful moment atop a fallen tree on a wintry South African morning. Compared with other African game, leopards are famously shy and rarely seen, partially because of their largely nocturnal hunting habits. Leopards number among many other species of top predators whose population numbers are falling due to human impacts, making this a special sighting of a rare animal that is both powerful and extraordinarily gorgeous. Photo: Interior curved corridor in a 17th-century stone tower

The Round Tower is a 17th-century tower built under the authority of Christian IV in central Copenhagen, Denmark. It was built as an astronomical observatory, and this image shows its well known, 7.5-degree helical corridor, which leads to the top and an expansive view of Copenhagen. Photo: Jockeys in colorful jerseys coming around a racetrack

One year of hopes, no more than ninety seconds to make the dream come true. Ten jockeys, dressed in the representative colors of their contrade, riding bareback on magnificent horses, while citizens on the bleachers scream with pride. They circle the Piazza del Campo three times to win the Palio. A whirlwind of feelings, colors, and flags creates this magical atmosphere, wherein people crowded in the square can only use their arms as telescopes to see the horses ride by their camera shot. I panned the camera with the moving horses and jockeys so that they remained sharp. Because in those seconds, they are all there is. I will never forget the opportunity I had to be up close and personal with a tiger in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I love this shot because you really get the sense that you can touch him as his nose comes sharply into focus and the rest of him softly blurs out of focus. Almost surreal. I captured these adventurers after a warm and toasty ride up to the Aiguille du Midi (in the French Alps) on the Téléphérique to 3,842 meters. I was short on breath just walking around on the platforms of the station (the buildings are like something out of a James Bond film, perched on the edge of a gut-wrenching void), and these guys had climbed up!
