Photo: Snorkelers swimming among sharks in French Polynesia
In Moorea, French Polynesia, the warm, turquoise-blue waters are often the place for some special encounters. Swimming among the sharks, the rays and the varied variety of fish is quite easy. This shot was taken from a boat with a remote-controlled drone.. (This photo and caption were submitted to Your Shot.)

Picture of a baby elephant and its mother in the Serengeti
This Month in Photo of the Day: Animal Pictures
On photo safari in the Serengeti in February 2012, we caught sight of this baby among a herd of grazing elephants. It was cute how the young elephant would walk in and out of its mother's legs as she was walking along. (This photo and caption were submitted to My Shot.)

Photo: A man practicing tai chi at sunrise along the Bund in Shanghai
This Month in Photo of the Day: Traveler Contest Images
I was jet-lagged after a 16-hour flight from Chicago. Since I was awake anyway, I figured I'd walk along the Bund for some photo shooting. There is a lot of activity in the morning: people riding bikes, running, flying kites, etc. I got lucky—this man was doing tai chi as the sun rose among the skyscrapers. It made for a great photo opportunity. (This photo and caption were submitted to the 2012 National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest.) Have photos of your own travels you would like to submit? Photo: The village of Gásadalur in the Faroe Islands
This Month in Photo of the Day: Traveler Contest Images
The village of Gásadalur with the island of Mykines in the background.
Until a tunnel was built in 2004, the 16 residents living in Gásadalur had to take a strenuous hike or horseback ride over the steep 1,300-foot (400-meter) mountain in order to make it to the other villages.
It was a rare sunny day in the Faroe Islands and I had to wait until the clouds rolled in to provide some softer light. I decided to go with a long exposure (1 minute and 10 seconds) to illustrate the force of the wind and a serene sea among the isolated islands.

While traveling on business I came across this magnificent winter scene. While similar in appearance to hoarfrost, this was a light dusting of new fallen snow.
